08.09.2016

The main topics of the 9-th TLDCON International Conference were developing and supporting the domains in national languages.

The 9-th TLDCON 2016 International Conference of administrators and registrars of the national top level domains in the CIS, Central and Eastern Europe Countries was held on September, 7-8, 2016, in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia.

More than 150 people from 22 countries became participants of the conference organized by the Coordination Center for Internet and Technical Center for Internet. Smart Internet Foundation / .ÄÅÒÈ representatives were among them.
The main topics of this conference are questions of multilanguage domains developing and supporting them by the mail services and social networks in particular.

At the section, dedicated to these issues, representatives of the top level domains, using national ABC .ÓÊÐ, .ÄÅÒÈ, .ÑÐÁ, .ÁÅË, .ÑÀÉÒ, /JYKFQY.ÎÍËÀÉÍ è .გე (IDN Ãðóçèè) , made their reports.

“National language domains make easy entering to the net for users who find it hard to operate with Latin symbols. For example, .ÄÅÒÈ domain which is intended for the beginners and some of them just started to study the internet science.
Any website becomes more understandable and available with Cyrillic address, - says Denis Zhilin, Smart Internet Foundation Marketing Director. We face some difficulties during the .ÄÅÒÈ promotion. It is the same for many other Multilanguage domains.

The most popular question today is absence of the Cyrillic mail service. Social networks don’t like IDNs either; they convert Multilanguage addresses into hard-to-remember ASCII symbols.

Other domain representatives said the same. It was also accepted to send the perspective petition to biggest mail services asking them to continue  work at the Multilanguage domains support.

There are about 900 thousands domain names in .ÐÔ which is the first among IDNs in the world. It demonstrates stable development and about 3-4% growth annually. The main restraining factor is absence of full Cyrillic mail addresses using. This problem is common for IDNs in general. The petition initiation was supported by other IDN’s registries,- said Andrey Vorobyev, Director of CCTLD .RU/.ÐÔ
TLDCON 2016 participants also emphasized that such IDN’s problems concern not only some administrator’s interests but millions of people who use national languages addresses. So if current mail services do not pay attention to this issue other new and more flexible companies will take place on the market.

Traditionally, information security, law and secondary domain market issues were discussed at the conference as well.

Besides, Michael Yakushev, ICANN Vice President in Russia, CIS and East Europe countries, spoke about progress in IANA-transition process. He said that on October, 1, 2016, IANA functions will go out from the US government control to be delegated to the new multi stakeholder structure.

Michael Yakushev also said that the 2-nd New gTLD application acceptance round could start in 2017 already.
